Our story

We didn’t set out to build another calorie tracker.

Stephanie Sanzo had the coaches, the plans and the results. What she never had was one that survived a busy week. Jamie watched it happen for years, then built the fix.

Why we built Meal Engine

2:34

Hi, I'm Stephanie Sanzo. And I'm Jamie Bisset. And we are the founders of Meal Engine. Meal Engine is an app available now on both the App Store and the Play Store.

So what is it? It is an adaptive coaching system that not only tracks your calories or builds your meal plan, but coaches you every step of the way. See, this is funny, because I've downloaded apps to track my food but I've never actually been coached by a meal plan app.

You have had many coaches over the years. I've hired so many — which sparked the reason for developing this app in the first place. With every diet I was given I learned something new, but at the same time I could never follow anything I was given. What would happen is you ended up going back to tracking, but tracking never quite gave you that same experience. Exactly — because sometimes I'm just so busy and I want to be told what to do and what to eat.

So this made me think that we had to solve a problem. And it was a problem that hadn't been solved anywhere else, unless you were going to go to the trouble of hiring yourself a coach, paying the hundreds if not thousands of dollars to be able to work with someone — or you're left to fend for yourself with all of the same type of tracking apps, where you plug your food in and you have to stick to some type of number that often never holds up in real life.

We wanted to create something that would help everyday people achieve their fitness goals, their health goals. So we created Meal Engine, because it's not only a tracking system but it's also a coach. And one that you can check in with at any stage.

Not only can you check in with it, you can even call it. Which is crazy, because sometimes I know for myself I've got questions now — I don't want to wait to the end of the week to check in. If I've got something that's worrying me, I'm not sure about, I just want to be able to call. And instead of having to individually type in foods, plug it into a diary, you can literally call, speak out loud, or even take photos of your food and get everything automated in seconds.

Now, I don't want you to freak out thinking that you're going to be calling a person, because you're not. You're going to be calling the Engine, and it's going to see everything that you do and that you've been doing in your plans, and adjust accordingly.

The Engine is the AI coach that we created to navigate this system, which can view all of your data and see everything that you're doing. So instead of just going to a platform like ChatGPT that doesn't really know all that much about you, this is seeing everything and can therefore give you recommendations based off your real-world experience and what's going on every day of the week.

Say it's been Saturday and you've just gone out with some friends or your family and you've gone off plan — tell the Engine, it doesn't matter. It will recalibrate for the next day or during the week to make sure that you hit your calorie targets. It's bulletproof dieting. So download it today, unlock your free trial and get started.

Fifteen years of “almost”

If you follow fitness, you probably know Stephanie — more than three million people do. What most people don’t know is that nutrition was always the part she found hardest. Not for lack of effort, and not for lack of help: over the years she worked with some genuinely brilliant coaches, and most of their plans worked.

The problem was — I could never sustain them forever. Eventually life would get busy, the plan would stop fitting, and I’d feel like I was back at square one again.
— Stephanie Sanzo

That cycle — great plan, real results, then life happens and the plan doesn’t bend — is the actual reason most diets fail. Not weak willpower. Not the wrong macros. A plan that couldn’t adapt.

The lesson that became a product

Her conclusion was simple…

Whatever you can stick to is what wins.

Not the one that looks perfect on paper. Not the one your favourite fitness person follows. The one that fits your food, your schedule and your life — and adapts when your life changes.

Jamie had a front-row seat to all of it, and kept seeing the same thing from the other side: the knowledge existed, the coaching worked, but nothing could stay with you between check-ins. The fix wasn’t another meal plan. It was a system that does what a great coach does — watch, adjust, keep you moving — every single day.

So he built it. Self-funded, family-built in Geelong, Australia. No investors, no growth team, no one to answer to except the people using it.

Coaching for everyone — not just the 1%

Great one-on-one nutrition coaching works, and it costs hundreds of dollars a month — because you’re paying a person to watch your week, rebalance your plan and talk you through the wobbles. Most people can’t justify that, so they end up with the only alternative: a calorie tracker that counts but never coaches — a job, not a plan.

Meal Engine exists to close that gap. The Engine builds your plan around your goals and your food, logs meals from a photo or a sentence, rebalances your day when life happens, and reviews your week like a coach would — from US$9.95 a month. Everything we learned personally, applied into a system anyone can use.
